WHAT BREAKS YOUR HEART?

It’s not about what we do, what we say, or how we touch – it’s about being present in a way that tells those who are suffering that they are not and never will be alone. (Lipsky, 2009, p.215)

Hidden Spiritual Wounds

Anything that overwhelms our ability to cope can be traumatic.

It's disheartening that places meant for nourishment, healing, and spiritual growth can become sites of suffering and pain.

When a source of spiritual values and hopes becomes a source of pain, it is common to feel abandoned, isolated, and alone.

We may not think of it in these terms, but because this pain impacts our core identity, it is a form of trauma.

Moreover, we are aware that trauma resides in the body. Regardless of the time that has passed, we may find ourselves in situations that trigger those feelings of pain, as if we are still experiencing the traumatic event itself.

It is due to this inherent nature that spiritual trauma is quite complex.

Because spiritual trauma can become deeply rooted in our minds and bodies, it can impact our self-image, relationships, and spirituality. It can even shape our perception of God.

These complex wounds are challenging to overcome because they involve uncovering and healing multiple layers.

Creating A Safe Place

What does it look like to hold space well and come alongside those who are experiencing the residual effects of spiritual trauma?

Spiritual trauma can be overwhelming and difficult to heal without support.

We all need a safe space to express our pain and share our struggles and questions without fear of shame or judgment.

The Hidden Wounds uses a healing approach: It organizes small groups in circular formations and guides them through principles and practices that facilitate a shared exploration process.
